Lady’s mantle or Alchemilla vulgaris, is a perennial herb found in Europe, Asia, and North America. It is occasionally cultivated; however, it is most commonly seen in unfertilized grasslands and mountain slopes. This member of the rose family has a long history in traditional European herbalism for its wide variety of beneficial uses. It is most commonly used for female reproductive issues, menstrual issues, infertility, menopause and postpartum care. It has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as an astringent for various conditions. Lady’s Mantle is generally steeped as tea and blended into botanical infusions. It aids in relieving stress, anxiety and insomnia.
Its scientific name Alchemilla, roughly translates to “little alchemist” or “little magic one.” Lady’s Mantle is used in love and protection spells. It’s essence invokes hope in times of despair. Folklore concerning Lady's Mantle seems to focus on the dew that is gathered on the leaves at the center of its furrowed leaves, which is said to be a key ingredient in several alchemical formulas. The dew was also said to be collected and used as a beauty lotion. Lady's Mantle is associated with the worship of the Earth Mother and Mother Mary. It is represented by the Queen of Cups in the tarot.
